What is Buddhism? Buddhism is a way of life practiced mostly in Asia and is the sixth most popular religion. There are two major branches of Buddhism, called Theravada and Mahayana Buddhism.
Siddhartha Gotama started Buddhism. He was born in 563 B.C. in a royal family in Lumbini, now located in Nepal. He found out that wealth and luxury did not guarantee happiness at age 29. From then, he sought to find the key to human happiness. After six years of study and meditation, he discovered the way to be happy. Today we call this discovery enlightenment. After enlightenment, he spent the rest of his life teaching Buddhism, until his death at age eighty.
Buddhism provides ways to achieve true happiness. Buddhists believe that salvation can be achieved using human ability. That is why there are no higher powers in Buddhism. Buddhism is not about reincarnation or afterlife; it focuses on present life. It also focuses on understanding the Four Noble Truths and following the Eight Fold Path.
The goal of Buddhism is to achieve nirvana. Nirvana is the eastern word for salvation and means the end of suffering. Buddhists can achieve nirvana by understanding the Four Noble Truths. The first Truth is that suffering is the nature of life. It is the tool for survival. Hunger is a form of suffering. If someone was born without hunger, they would never eat and they would die. The second Truth is that the cause of suffering is the desire for certain things. For example, if you wanted a toy, you would suffer if you did not acquire it. The third Truth is that suffering can be relieved. Even though we are born with it, it can still be cured. The last Truth is that following the Eight Fold Path is a way to cure suffering. The Eight-Fold Path can be summed up in a few sentences. First, you have to lead a moral life. Second, you have to be mindful of thoughts and actions. Lastly, you have to develop wisdom and understanding of the nature of life.
Now you know the history of Buddhism, it’s teachings, and the goal of its believers. As you can see, it is unlike some other belief systems because it does not have any higher powers in it. A similarity would be that it has scriptures. Like many other religions, it provides a way to achieve salvation.
